Origin of Black Skincare

Published on 2 April 2025 at 21:39

Hello everyone! Welcome to this week’s blog. Today for this blog we’re going to go more of an informational route so we can be educated beauties. There’s a question that is not often talked about and it’s the Origin of Skincare. Preferably Black skincare. The history of Black skincare dates back to the mid-1800s with revolutionary figures, like Annie Turnbo Malone and Madam C.J. Walker, developing products that established a foundation for the modern Black beauty industry.

Going back in time Black skincare was everything ranging from hairs on our bodies to our skin as the natural ingredients would be mixed to honor and represent cultural traditions, societal norms, and scientific advancements. A few ways skincare has been used is The Yoruba people in Nigeria having a tradition of using she butter and palm oil to care for their skin. Ashanti people from Ghana use shea butter and coconut oil to hydrate and protect their skin from the sun. Many more places use the same products but for different uses and it’s extremely fascinating.

Currently, in the present time, there aren’t many brands that are Black friendly as some brands promote products with harmful ingredients. In the 21st century, many skincare and cosmetic products are designed and tested on fairer skin tones instead of Black skin. The results of this factor to either A. these products cause irritation or B. these products cause other adverse reactions in our skin. A change has been made and there are now Black-owned brands that offer products that are specifically made for Black skin. These brands relied on the culturally traditional skincare practices that their ancestors created and mixed modern science to create products for Black skin.

Now I really hope you guys learned a few things in this blog today! This was quite a lot of get down but I managed really well! I hope you enjoyed this blog and as always I’ll see you in the next one! ;)

“I really liked this blog—it’s cool to see the history of Black skincare and how traditions still influence products today. It’s frustrating that mainstream brands overlook Black skin, but it’s great to see Black-owned brands making a change.”
